ECONOMIC-GEOGRAPHICAL REGION OF SHEKI-ZAQATALA
Economic-geographical region of Sheki-Zaqatala include the administrative regions of Balakan, Qakh, Zaqatala, Oghuz and Qabala. This region is located in the north-west of Azerbaijan Republic, on the southern slopes of the Major Caucasus and in the Qanikh-Ayrichay valley. Its territory is 8.96 thousand km and cover 10.3% of the country. In this region there are 581, 7 thousand people, including 160, 7 thousand of urban population. 5, 7% of country population lives there, especially in the foothills. The area of this economic region is rich in natural resources. Filizchay, one of the major ore deposits of Caucasus is located in this region. 27% of the area is covered by forest; Balakan and Zaqatala belong to the main part of this area. This region includes a seismically active area of the country. The base of agriculture consists of wheat, tobacco, fruits and vegetables, vine-growing, tea, potatoes, rice and sunflower. In particular, there are grown the roses. The industry is poorly developed. The agriculture is specialized in light and food industries. Due to the picturesque nature, the Sheki-Zaqatala economic-geographical region is one of the important resorts and tourist regions of the country. There is a large recreation-tourism center in Qabala. Recently, airports have been built in Zaqatala and Qabala. There is an airport in Sheki. 45318
