ABSHERON ECONOMIC AND GEOGRAPHICAL REGION
Economic and geographical region of Absheron includes Baku and Sumgait, the administrative regions of Absheron and Khizi. Economic and geographical region in the East of the country located on the shores of the Caspian Sea and has favorable economic and geographical position. Its area is of 5.42 km2, and covers 6.3% of the country’s territory. The relief consists of hilly plains in the foothills and low mountains. Dry subtropical climate is typical. There are 2651.4 thousand people in this economic and geographical area and 28.7% of the population lives here. The average population density is of 489.2 people per km2. Economic and geographical region of Absheron has oil, natural gas, limestone, cement, quartz and sand reserves. Absheron peninsula is rich in spa resources; there are also plenty of sun and wind energy resources. Curative mineral water comes to the surface (Shih, Surakhany). Many mud volcanoes are diffused (Keireki, Lokbaban).Oil and gas, petrochemical, basic chemistry, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, engineering (oil and mining equipment, electrical engineering, ship repair), energy, light and food industry are the main economic sectors. The agricultural base consists of suburban complex farm including milk-meat of livestock, poultry, sheep, vegetables, horticulture, viticulture, floriculture and dry subtropical fruit growing. Climatic conditions of this geographical region permit to grow agricultural produce such as olive oil, saffron, almonds, pistachios, figs, grapes, white and black raisin and watermelons.
